An Eventful Sunday
Coming back early from JB yesterday, I reached Bukit Batok at around 12.30. Bathed and proceeded to leave the house. But wait! Something happened before i reached Sg, and that is I collected my PSP from the shop. Poor thing had its LCD cracked when i put it into my bag one day.
OK, back to eventful Sunday. So I left my house and met up with Dana and Jaxx at Tiong Bahru MRT. Didn’t need to call them, because i saw them topping up ezlink as i exited the station. Dana’s Taiwanese friend’s colleague would be arriving in Sg at around 11am, so we would pick her up from her hotel and bring her sight seeing.
Her name is Faye, and she’s here for 2 days, for a company meeting. Her company deals with Chipboards for LG! (but no, no discounts on LG products). After we picked her up at her hotel, which was the Holiday Inn RIGHT BESIDE OUR OFFICE (like really… just next door)… we proceeded to Tiong Bahru Market for a late lunch. We thought it would be a good idea to introduce Faye to the local cuisine.
So the final array of foods that decorated our table was:
1) Curry pork ribs with bread
2) Char Kuay Teow
3) Bak Kut Teh
4) Pigs Trotters
5) Ice Kacang
A hearty (but not so healthy) meal! (pictures to be posted once i get them). Speaking of pictures, Faye had a new camera… A Sony T2, white one.
It was so cool! I just loved the sliding cover, and the HUGE TOUCH SCREEN! Image quality was good, and color was superb (as are all Sony cameras). And she got it super cheap in Taiwan, amounting to only about SGD200++. I might just get one next month (provided I’ve found a job).
After lunch we proceeded to the Merlion beside Esplanade. After taking pictures at the Esplanade, we walked to the Merlion… only to realise that storm clouds were brewing! We watched in awe as the clouds overtook us, swirling and gliding overhead. It was beautiful. But thankfully, it hadnt started to rain yet, so the customary “i-drank-from-the-Merlion’s-mouth” pictures were taken. As we headed to Anderson Bridge beside the Fullerton, thunder could be heard. And as we took our last picture at the bridge, raindrops the size of marbles started falling. Rain had been falling on and off the whole afternoon, in 5 minute spells, but this time, it looked much more serious, as the skies had turned a dark gray.
We ran (yes we ran) with the 2 girls huddled under a tiny umbrella, and us being guys, following a step behind not bothering to shield ourselves. Johnnie Boy chose this exact time to call me, asking where I was. My reply was a serious “Running in the rain”. But thankfully, (I’m going to be using this word ALOT this post) the rain stopped as we neared Esplanade. Another 5 minute shower! And we weren’t even that wet. In fact we weren’t wet at all. We bragged amongst ourselves about how we outran the rain… until God decided to punish us for our arrogance by sending more rain. But God being gracious and loving also provided an underpass that we scampered into. =)
So, on to The Cage at Kallang for futsal!!! Jaxx being a football fan/player, I thought it would be a good idea to bring him to play, thus experiencing our local brand of wild chaotic football. And more excitement ensued. We arrived a few minutes early, and noticed people playing in our court. Wait a few minutes, we thought. But after awhile, the boys inside (a bunch of caucasians teens) said that they had the court till 8. I had booked the court from 7-9, and that would mean that there was an overlap of an hour!
Singapore being Singapore, I was quite surprised at this turn of events, but what was to happen next surprised me even more. Because of the overlap, I had to run down to the office to enquire. The manager met me there and gave me 2 choices. When he said that i almost retorted “who are you to give me “choices” when its apparently your fault”, but I held back. I listened as he said “one, you play now, i chase them away and they wont have to pay. Two, u wait till 8, play till 10, and you wont have to pay.”
WOW! What a steal. So after discussing, everyone thought it would be much better to wait an hour and play for free. More surprises came our way, as the caucasian boys only had 6 players. They invited us to join them, playing 6 on 6 from 7-8. That meant that we played 3 hours for free! Praise the Lord! The match in itself was good, as we thrashed the caucasian boys. And from 8-10 we had fun playing amongst ourselves (though tiring). Mr See Kok was on fire, as was Ash and Jia Bao. Ian Ang did his usual best at scoring and John and Nic were stellar in goal. Thanks again to everyone who made it. It wasn’t easy trying to amass enough people, but it was worth it, and I truly thank everyone who helped me invite players.
After the match, Ian Ang my animation director drove us to Geylang. He wasnt very sure about the directions (I’m sure he doesn’t go there often
) so we checked the street directory. We had previously found out that the famous frog porridge in Geylang was in Lorong 17. But luckily, we made a wrong turn, and ended up at Lorong 19 where the frog porridge was. So we alighted (Thanks Ian) had a good meal. Jaxx and I were pretty much bushed from futsal, and didnt really have an appetite. But we still ate and it was good.
Following the porridge, we walked around searching for durians. Faye didnt have any special interest in them (smelly, she said) but Dana loves them. So she made it a point to let Faye try the local durians. Three Taiwanese and one Malaysian, walking in Geylang searching for durians. After one bite, Faye couldn’t continue, which was a pity.
And so ended an eventful Sunday. We got onto the cab at 11.45 and dropped them off at their respective places. And to top the day off, the cab uncle was pretty nice and friendly. =)
